National Disability Institute: Social and Economic Independence
National Disability Institute (NDI) is a non-profit, strategic partner working with NCB Capital Impact to promote independence for persons with disabilities.
The Issue: 49 Million Americans with Disabilities Are Trapped At or Below Poverty Level
One in three Americans with disabilities lives at or below the poverty level. Without housing and employment assistance, they cannot survive. To qualify for this assistance, they must not exceed a low-income and asset level offering no opportunity for upward mobility. Government regulations for social security and health care benefits limit opportunities to work, preserve income, and build assets.
Our Solution: Opportunity for Economic Freedom for Americans with Disabilities
To create opportunities and choices to end the cycle of poverty among Americans with disabilities, NDI collaborates with leaders from the federal government, business, disability, philanthropic, and financial communities to direct capital, expertise and innovative technical assistance in five critical areas:
- Affordable and Accessible Housing
- Asset Development and Savings Strategies
- Financial Education and Benefits Counseling
- Utilization of Favorable Tax Provisions, Matched Savings Plans, and Work Incentives
Tools: Financing, Advocacy and Technical Assistance
- Regional Housing Forums: National technical assistance on housing for people with disabilities
- Research on affordable housing opportunities, health care and asset development strategies
- Return-to-work training program for service providers, beneficiaries, families and state administrators
- Policy development at the federal, state and local levels
